Why DO we wear the makeup products that we chose to wear? - photo credit: Idhren via photopin cc

There are a LOT of makeup products out there; lots of different brands; just lots of everything! How is it that anyone can decide what to use or how to use it? Or, the bigger question is: why do we wear what we wear?

I believe that nearly every woman falls into one of the three categories when it comes to why she wears makeup. We’ll call them the three C’s for makeup wearers: comfort, commercials, and/or confusion.

Do you think you fit into one of these categories? Let’s explore each of them just a bit more.

Comfort

This is probably the category most women fall into. These women wear makeup primarily because they’re comfortable with it and probably because they’ve found something that works for them (and yes, maybe it’s the same “something” they’ve been using for the past 10+ years). A woman who fits into this group knows what works and refuses to sway from it. She sticks to the tried and true because there’s no fear or risk of screwing it up.

Commercials

We are bombarded every day by commercials for new and improved makeup products. Watch any show and you’ll see makeup advertisements during commercial breaks. Open any magazine and you’ll see makeup ads throughout. Each ad, whether on television or in print, displays a product that promises to be the new miracle product that you NEED!! And many women will buy into the hype and purchase the advertised product. (I consider myself among this group! I tend to be pulled into the mascara commercials more than anything else.) The women who fit into this category are looking for a perfect product and a perfect look and think that if they follow enough commercials, they will get the look they want.

Confusion

This is where I lump everyone else. Members of this group honestly have no idea why they wear what they wear. They may wear makeup partly because of comfort, partly because of the power of commercials, partly because of what they’ve read online, and partly because of what someone’s told them. They are the ones who may need the most help because they’re just lost in the world of makeup! I promise, there is hope even for the most confused makeup wearer.

In honor of Makeup Mondays, let’s each make a New Year’s resolution to try at least one new product this year and get out of whatever comfort zone we may be locked into right now. Are you up for the challenge?? What new product are you going to try? Leave a comment below stating which new product you’re going to try so that a year from now you can come back and check to see if you actually followed through.

I’m really bad when it comes to blush. I don’t necessarily need the same brand, but I can’t get away from the color. As a matter of fact, it’s more of a bronzer that I use. I’ve always wanted to try different colors (specifically those with pinker tones), but I’ve yet to go through with it.

That said…I will definitely be taking part in this challenge. Pink blush…here I come!

    Great article!

Congrats!!! This is great that you are writing for this website, it just shows your a great beauty blogger. I love the article and it’s so true. You don’t have to twist my arm to take part in this challenge. I’ve always been just a Chapstick girl, I never liked lipstick or lipgloss. I don’t think the colors look good on me, plus they never stay on for long. So i’m going to really try and find a lipstick and color I like :)
